Last weekend, numerous wildfires broke out in the Caribou region of British Columbia

The largest fire, located between Williams Lake and Quesnel, estimated at 50 hectares

Challenged by dry, windy conditions, the BC Wildfire Service responded to several wildfires at the Cariboo Fire Center on Saturday (April 20).

The largest and most visible fire is the Burgess Creek wildfire, located between Williams Lake and Quesnel.

Madison Dahl, BCWS public information officer, said the Burgess Creek wildfire was discovered around 3pm on Saturday and has grown to approximately 50 hectares.

The situation was still out of control on Saturday evening and has resulted in a full BCWS response on site, including crews, air support and heavy equipment.

Dahl said smoke from the fire is easily visible from Highway 97, Quesnel and Williams Lake.

There are no structures in the area of the fire, which has been classified as suspected of being human-caused.

There were other smaller fires in the Cariboo Fire Center area, but these have been contained and are considered contained or extinguished.

One other fire on the BCWS map in Wildwood is being responded to by the local fire department.

Dahl encouraged residents to be aware of the extremely dry conditions and use caution around campfires, and make sure tools and water are available and nearby if needed.
